The year ender of UFC will be in Las Vegas. The two UFC warriors who will fight in main card are the former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar (5-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) and ex-Strikeforce titleholder Alistair Overeem (35-11 MMA, 0-0 UFC). The Lesnar vs Overeem will bring great action and excitement in the Octagon on December 30, 2011 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
As expected next month's UFC 141 headliner between former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar (5-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) and incoming ex-Strikeforce titleholder Alistair Overeem (35-11 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will determine a No. 1 contender.
UFC officials today formally announced the stakes of the five-round non-title fight.
As today's press release stated, "The winner will be crowned the No. 1 contender and earn a title shot in the new year."
UFC 141 takes place Dec. 30 as a rare Friday-night UFC card at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view, and prelims will stream on Facebook and air on Spike TV.
The Lesnar-Overeem victor meets the winner of Saturday's UFC on FOX headliner between current UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and top contender Junior Dos Santos.
Lesnar hasn't competed since an October 2010 title loss to Velasquez. A second bout with diverticulitis scratched a planned summer contest with fellow "The Ultimate Fighter 13" coach Dos Santos. The former WWE star's inactivity led some MMA pundits to speculate that a retirement announcement was in the works, but White quickly branded the speculation as "ridiculous."
Overeem, of course, was released from Strikeforce in late July following a conflict with UFC and Strikeforce officials regarding his ability to compete in a Sept. 10 bout with Antonio Silva. He ultimately signed with the UFC when the situation was resolved.
Overeem carries a 10-fight win streak going back more than four years. In addition to his title run in Strikeforce, he picked up an interim DREAM heavyweight belt in December 2010 and a K-1 world-grand-prix kickboxing title three weeks prior. Recent victories have come over the likes of Brett Rogers, Todd Duffee and Fabricio Werdum.
